Directions

Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that is used to treat GERD and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) in adults and children. It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach by blocking the pumps. Nexium is available in three different dosages: 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg. The primary indications for use of this product are heartburn, acid reflux, ulcers and perforations in the esophagus, heartburn and erosive esophagitis. Nexium is indicated for children aged 5 years and older. The maximum daily dose is 20 mg. The dosage is based on the condition being treated and the response to treatment. If the patient has not responded to one of these doses, the dose should be decreased by 2.5 mg per day for 4 to 6 weeks. The dose may be increased up to 20 mg per day or decreased to 5 mg per day, depending on the response. The maximum daily dose of 20 mg is 40 mg per day. It is recommended that children aged under 10 years of age should be treated with Nexium for at least two weeks before being given other PPIs for children.
