The letter from the FDA explains that manufacturers don’t always follow the drug’s manufacturer’s lead and that Nexium is a nonprescription drug.
“The FDA's revised labeling and information does not fully reflect information contained in this letter,” said John A. M. Hofer, a health policy analyst at the Cleveland Clinic. “The drug’s manufacturers must carefully consider the potential for drug safety risks and interactions, including serious adverse events.”
FDA letter authorizations for Nexium are set to be published in the May 10th issue of the journal PLOS Medicine. The drug is intended for adults suffering from heartburn, a common condition where acidity in the stomach and esophagus causes frequent stomach discomfort.
Nexium is the only prescription medication for adults and children over age 18 that is not covered under the FDA's revised labeling. The new labeling does not change the drug’s marketing status.
The FDA is requiring Nexium manufacturer Apcalis to submit a rebate as soon as possible after the FDA’s latest labeling changes. The company does not anticipate the time frame. Apcalis has no immediate plans to appeal the new labeling, as it is not expected to take effect in 2023.
Mylan said the company is committed to getting the drug's rebate to Apcalis as soon as possible. The company is reviewing whether to appeal the revised labeling or to file an appeal with the FDA.
The FDA is reviewing the letter and will decide whether Apcalis will appeal the new labeling, or decide to continue marketing the medication.
If the company appeals, it may take several years to appeal. A company’s appeal usually ends in court, and Apcalis may no longer submit a rebate.
Hofer said the FDA will review the letter and will update it as soon as possible.
“The agency's revised labeling includes a detailed explanation of the drug’s potential adverse effects, including its interactions with other medications and the need for ongoing monitoring,” Hofer said.
“To date, the FDA has not received an overwhelming number of reports indicating that the manufacturer may have serious interactions with other drugs, particularly drugs known to interact with Nexium.”
FDA letter authorizations for Nexium are set to be published in the March 5th issue of the journal PLOS Medicine.
